Sergeant Major is the highest enlisted rank in the United States Army. It is also the base rank required for the leadership position of Command Sergeant Major (CSM), a senior non-commissioned officer who serves as the principal advisor to the commanding general or commander on all enlisted matters.

CSMs play a vital role in the Army, providing guidance and support to the enlisted force. They are responsible for:
- Advising the commanding general on enlisted matters
- Mentoring and developing junior enlisted soldiers

- Representing the enlisted force at various levels
Rank Insignia
The rank insignia for Sergeant Major is three chevrons, three rockers, and a diamond, all in gold. It is worn on both the left and right collars of the uniform.
