Sergeant Major: The Highest Enlisted Rank in the Army

Sergeant Major is the highest enlisted rank in the United States Army. It is also the base rank required for the leadership position of Command Sergeant Major (CSM), a senior non-commissioned officer who serves as the principal advisor to the commanding general or commander on all enlisted matters.

CSM Responsibilities

CSMs play a vital role in the Army, providing guidance and support to the enlisted force. They are responsible for:

  • Advising the commanding general on enlisted matters
  • Mentoring and developing junior enlisted soldiers
  • Enforcing Army regulations and standards
  • Representing the enlisted force at various levels

Rank Insignia

The rank insignia for Sergeant Major is three chevrons, three rockers, and a diamond, all in gold. It is worn on both the left and right collars of the uniform.
