Are Doves and Pigeons the Same?
A Scientific Perspective
From a scientific standpoint, there is no definitive difference between doves and pigeons. Both belong to the same avian family, Columbidae, which includes over 300 species of birds. They share similar physical characteristics, such as a plump body, short legs, and a small, rounded head. Additionally, their cooing vocalizations are virtually indistinguishable.
Subtle Distinctions
While doves and pigeons are largely indistinguishable scientifically, there are some subtle differences that ornithologists recognize. Doves are generally smaller and more slender than pigeons, with a more gentle and graceful flight pattern. Pigeons, on the other hand, are known for their robust build and powerful wings, which allow them to fly at higher altitudes and endure longer journeys.
